they are expecting peak bloom between March 29th and April 1st - fully dependent on weather conditions which.... well..... if you're from here know isn't exactly a pattern that exhibits a sense of reliability. Yet, we hold hope that the blossoms will bloom when expected!
What Should I Do?
- First - Mark the peak bloom days on your calendar 🌸
- Second - Look through my March Sake Picks and start getting bottles in order
- Third - Pick out a cute springtime outfit
- Fourth - Get your springtime event schedule on the books
With an influx of Sakura Season / Cherry Blossom events been flooding your timeline how do you pick the best event to go to? (I'd say all of them if you can!) There are tons of Sakura Season events coming your way but one you definitely don't want to miss is the Sakura Matsuri Japanese Street Festival Presented by the Japan-America Society of Washington D.C the weekend of April 11th & 12th.

What to Expect at the Matsuri?

A two day street festival taking over the Nation's Capital From 3rd to 7th Streets NW on Pennsylvania Ave near the base of Capitol Hill the Sakura Matsuri is an ecosystem come alive for just a weekend.
Whatever it is you're interested in you'll be able to find - with countless vendors you can explore Japanese culture from anime/manga, to science and technology coming out of Japan.... and not to mention lots to eat and drink!
Wait, Did you Say Drink?
Well of course I said drink - this is The Beverage Diary I'm not going to have you be thirsty on my watch. The Sakura Matsuri offers three primary drinking spots:
- Tachinomi Pavillion - a tent within the festival (requiring a separate ticket from the general festival entrance) that allows patrons a timed experience to taste their way through a range of Japanese and American Sake and Spirits!
- Hakutsuru Sake 101 Experience - Brought to you by Hakutsuru Sake - one of Japan's most notable breweries you'll be able to taste through a sampling of Japanese Sake. Well-versed staff in the tent also stand ready to answer your questions about Japanese Sake Brewing and any other nerdy questions you may have! Please note, you'll also need to purchase a separate ticket for this experience.
- Kirin Beer Gardens - Picture this, you're at a festival & the sun is finally shining down on Washington D.C after an entire winter of surviving snowcrete and negative zero windchills. It's the weekend, you have nothing to do but enjoy yourself, you're with your friends, and a gentle breeze blows against your skin but there's one thing missing... an ice cold Kirin straight from the keg.
Food vendors and multiple other merchants throughout will also be offering non-alcoholic options including teas, iced coffees, water, sodas, ramune, etc...
Ice cold Kirin at the 2023 Sakura Matsuri - can attest it did really hit the spot
I'm Sold, How Do I Attend?
Luckily tickets are already available for the 2026 Sakura Matsuri - Japanese Street Festival
A one day ticket is $20 and a two day ticket is $30 & all children 10 and under receive free admission and do not require a ticket for entry. Again, things like the Tachninomi Pavilion and the Hakutsuru Tasting experience require their own separate ticket that must be purchased. Check out the Sakura Matsuri website for all details on the event.
I'll definitely be at the Matsuri this year and if you see me, please feel free to say hello!
